Step Forward, free and nothing to download
Step Forward is one of the simplest group activities to break the ice: everyone stands in a line, someone reads “step forward if you have lived in another country” and whoever has takes one step. In a few minutes you discover tastes, trips and stories you have in common, and nobody has to speak in front of everyone unless they want to. On a single phone, the reader taps the names of those who move and the game keeps count of the steps on a track; each on your own phone, with a room, everyone sees the same statement and answers at the same time, perfect for remote meetings over a video call. The statements are suitable for class and work: nothing about relationships, money or awkward topics.
Tips and variations
- After each statement, ask the people who stepped forward why: that's where the best part of the activity comes out.
- For groups who don't know each other, start with the “Warm-up” statements and a goal of 5 steps.
- On a video call, create a room and share the link in the chat: everyone answers from their own phone.
